What you need
- Audio Recorder Editor Free installed on Windows 10 or 11
- A microphone: a USB mic, a headset, or the one built into your laptop
- Microphone access turned on in Windows Settings › Privacy › Microphone
Record your voice
- Open the program and choose Tools › Record.
- In the input list, choose your microphone. Speak and watch the level meter move.
- Leave the sample rate on Keep device rate, or pick 44.1 kHz for music and 48 kHz if the audio will go into a video.
- Click Start. Elapsed time and a peak light show while you record.
- Click Stop. The take opens in the editor as a waveform, ready to trim.
- Choose Convert / Export to save an MP3, or Save to keep a WAV master.
If the meter stays flat, Windows is usually blocking the microphone. Check the privacy setting above, then make sure the right device is selected.
Get a cleaner take
- Keep peaks below the top of the meter. A recording that hits the top clips and sounds harsh.
- Sit 15 to 30 cm from the mic and turn off fans when you can.
- Record a few seconds of silence first. It helps the noise reduction tool later.
Fix a mistake without starting over
Put the playhead just before the mistake and use punch-in recording. It plays a short pre-roll, then records over that passage, or mixes the new take over the old one if you prefer.

How long can I record?
There is no fixed time limit in the program. Very long recordings use more memory and disk space, so save regularly.

Which format should I save my recording in?
Save a WAV copy if you plan to edit more later; it keeps full quality. For sharing, export MP3 at 128 kbps for speech or 192 kbps and up for music. Every format is free.
My recording sounds distorted. What happened?
The input level was too high and the peaks clipped. Lower the microphone level in Windows Sound settings or on the mic itself and record again. Repair Studio’s De-clip can soften mild clipping.
Can I use a USB microphone or a headset?
Yes. Any microphone Windows recognizes appears in the recorder’s input list, including USB mics, headsets and webcams with a built-in mic.
